• Tips To Overcoming The Penguin And Unnatural Link Penalties

Wondering what to do if your site has recently been hit by a Penguin or Unnatural Link Penalty?

It’s been over a year since Google activated the two penalties so we know a lot more about them which makes it fairly easy to remedy them.

I wrote a post back in February that gives a lot of insight into what the differences between Panda and Penguin were and what you could do to combat them. Tonight I want to share a bit more information on how to recognize and remedy the Penguin and Unnatural Links penalties.

Let’s start with the nasty Penguin Penalty which first went live back in April of 2012. Google launched it in an attempt to combat webmasters using web spam to promote their sites. , Google’s liaison to webmasters, admitted that the remedy to Penguin was link-oriented.

We now know that the Penguin Penalty IS NOT a manual penalty but is instead an algorithmic penalty. So we also know that there is no reason to remove or disavow any backlinks to a site hit by Penguin. There is also no reason whatsoever to file for reconsideration with Google since the penalty is algorithmic.

So what’s the remedy to a Penguin Penalty?

You just need to generate higher-quality links to your site and make sure you’re not overusing any of your keywords in the anchor text.

So what is the Unnatural Link Penalty all about then?

Unnatural link warnings are sent out by Google whenever they find backlinks in a site’s link profile they don’t like. They are usually made aware of the links as a result of someone reporting the site to them as a webspam.

Marie Haynes posted an excellent article on SEOmoz a couple days back entitled ‘The Difference Between Penguin and an Unnatural Links Penalty (and some info on Panda too)‘ in which she shares the remedy process for removing the Unnatural Link Penalty. She also gives some excellent advice on what the differences are between the Penguin and Unnatural Link penalties that is a must-read for anyone fighting either of the two penalties.

Another good resource to check out is the video Matt Cutt posted a couple months ago in which he gave advice on how to find the unnatural links Google dislikes after you receive the warning.
